Internet & Mobile Phone Safety

Cyber Bulling - Mobile Phone Guidelines

The internet is a fantastic resource used by almost all of us. There are however some guidelines that should be followed to make sure that you stay safe online.

More information for parents can be found in the leaflet on the right.

  • if you use chat rooms or forums never give personal details out such as your name, address, school, phone number
  • beware that you may not be talking to who you think you are talking to
  • don't use a webcam - unless you are talking to someone you know and trust in real-life
  • never give your password to someone else
  • don't put pictures of yourself on the internet that make you look older than you are - or that identify you in some way (e.g. outside your house) - or pictures taken in your bedroom

Cyberbullying

This is when someone uses text, MSN, email or a social networking site like Facebook to be nasty to you. It's just as wrong as face-to-face bullying. The most important thing is to tell someone - either a parent, a teacher, another adult you trust. If you are a bully - just remember that once something has been entered into a computer system - it can always be retrieved as evidence.

Mobile Phones

Mobiles are part of everyday life for almost all of us. To use your mobile safely and considerately make sure you do the following:

  • Take care when crossing roads when using a mobile or listening to music - you may not hear cars coming or may be distracted if you are texting.
  • If you get a voicemail or text telling you you've won a prize - don't call or text back - it's probably a SCAM and will cost you lots of money to call or text.
  • If you are going out with your friends - make sure your PAYG is topped up and the battery is charged before you go in case of emergencies.
  • Don't take pictures / video of people if they don't want you to.
  • Don't upload pictures / video of other people to the internet if they don't want you to - ASK first.
  • Keep your phone securely in a pocket or bag - don't make yourself a target for theives.
  • Don't have loud phone conversations in quiet public places - it's rude.
  • Don't have long conversations on a mobile phone - there is some scientific evidence that it can cause health problems.
