September 28th, 2009Pupil Work, Years 7-9It was great to hear 8X1 singing so well first thing on a Monday morning. We didn’t have time to make a proper recording – we’ll try and do that next lesson – but here’s a taste of what’s to come!

September 17th, 2009Pupil Work, Years 7-9If you were in the year 8 lesson before lunch today, you will remember that we were singing Rule the World by Take That. I promised you the recording, and here it is – enjoy!
The volume level goes up and down a bit throughout the recording, but hopefully you get the idea. You were good for a first try! We’ll improve on that sound in our lessons throughout this half term. Well done!

Our Year 8 pupils worked on a project called Space Invaders earlier this year. They had to imagine what kind of music would accompany a film or TV show with that title, and use Reason to create it. The piece only needed to be short, but we were looking for a very futuristic sound, with ostinatos and drones. Here are four of the most successful results – well done to these pupils, your work was excellent!

June 16th, 2009Pupil Work, Years 7-9Here’s a nice piece of work by two of our year 8 pupils, Jane and Hannah. They’ve been using Michael Nyman’s Time Lapse as the basis for a little project based on sequencing. Have a listen to the piece they’ve made using Nyman’s piece as a starting point. Well done both!

Samba!

June 3rd, 2009Years 7-9
With this amazingly hot weather we’ve been having, the music rooms have been rather overheated. Sixteen computers in room 62 mean that we don’t even turn the radiators on in the middle of winter because we don’t need them. You can imagine what that means when it’s as hot as it has been this week.Add to that the fact that there have been exams upstairs in room 68, meaning that we can’t make noise, and there’s only been one solution. We’ve been grabbing every percussion instrument we can lay our hands on and heading off down the field to learn about samba playing!
Although it looks like a whole lot of fun (and probably sounds like a terrible racket to the rest of the staff!), those of you who have tried it will have worked out that playing the layered samba rhythms, and following the call-and-response patterns, is not as easy as it looks, especially outside. One small lapse in concentration mean that you can get totally lost!
