Young Consumer Competition - December 2008
Four year 10 pupils took part in the qualifying heats of the Young Consumer Competition on Friday 12th December (Nathan Lawrence, Ryan Richi, Bryony Fenton and Angharad Evans). The Trading Standards Institute invited teams of 14-17 year olds to test their understanding of consumer issues in a knockout style competition around the UK.

The team of four were tested on their knowledge of a huge range of consumer topics, including anything from their rights when shopping on the internet to food labelling and animal welfare, from managing money and finance to the role of the EC, and from toy safety to booking a holiday.

The Y Pant team fought a tough battle throughout the rounds to end up in joint 4 th place with Treorchy Comprehensive. With only 4 teams qualifying for the regional finals a tie break round was needed. Both teams started well with Y Pant finally qualifying by getting their question correct when asked about the details of the Medicines Act.

The next stage is the Rhondda Cynon Taf final to be held in the Pop Factory (Porth) sometime in February.

Test your own consumer knowledge – some of the questions the team faced

  • Laws made in Parliament are collectively known as “statute law”. What is the term used to describe senior Judges’ decisions that serve as the pattern or example for other similar cases?
  • How long is the cooling off period for a credit agreement signed on your doorstep?
  • What does A.B.T.A stand for?
  • Where is the largest castle in Europe?
  • How many degrees must you travel from the Greenwich Meridian in order to lose or gain one hour?
  • What is the minimum fat content of double cream?
  • Whose picture appears on the back of a £5
  • How old must you be to have a credit card in your own name?
  • Who is the Governor of the Bank of England?
