The Project is the 2nd coursework element (the 1st is the portfolio) for those who are taking Full Course GCSE ICT. The Project requires you to choose a business or organisation that could be improved by the use of ICT. The business or organisation does not have to be real but it needs to be realistic. Your project choice should be small enough for it to be feasible for you to create sensible and worthwhile ICT solutions. You cannot choose something large like Lloyds TSB, Tesco or Manchester United as they already have very complex and well established ICT systems. Your project should focus on smaller applications such as; a surf shop, a music shop, a regional football supporters club, a netball club, a youth club, a clothing shop, a horse riding school etc. For a larger selection of potential business project topics click here. The main parts of your project are:- Analysis The analysis phase is where you gather information about the existing business or organisation by questioning, interviewing or observing the main people in that business or organisation. During this stage you identify problems that exist in the business or organisation and find out what functions the client would like your ICT solution to perform. To find out more about analysis click on the navigation bar on the left. Design The design phase is where you start putting together ideas of what functions your solution will involve. Before this though you have to take into account what alternative methods you could use; the business or organisation wouldn't 'splash out' on a new computer system if all they had to do was have an improved paper based filing system or way of recording all their financial transactions in a ledger. Next you look at what software you are going to use, then you design various elements of your solution such as the database data structure, spreadsheet appearance and formulas, multimedia presentation content and navigation and poster or business card appearance. To find out more about design click on the navigation bar on the left. Development This is where you construct or create your various ICT solutions. For example:- A database to store records of customers, stock, appointments, trips etc. A spreadsheet to work out incomings and outgoings, profit and loss. A multimedia presentation to advertise your chosen business or organisation A poster to advertise your chosen business or organisation Business cards to advertise your chosen business or organisation A standard letter mail merged to a suitable query in your database. To find out more about development click on the navigation bar on the left. Evaluation This is where you critically assess how effective your overall solution was. Seeking feedback from the user and classmates would be useful here. To find out more about evaluation click on the navigation bar on the left. To see or download the Project Mark Sheet click here. Here is a Project Task List for your teacher to fill in. GCSE Specification 2009 onwards
