Charity at Y Pant

by Miss S. Maxwell

As a school with so many wonderful opportunities available, we are grateful for all that we have and appreciate the importance of helping others.  We support a range of good causes and raise money for different charities throughout the year. Over the years we have raised thousands of pounds to give to our designated charities and have received gratitude from people all over the  country for our efforts.  It is something the pupils and staff are passionate about and join together to help make a big difference.

Ty Hafan is a children’s hospice based in Sully, South Wales and looks after children from south, east, west and mid Wales. It offers comfort, care and support to life-limited children, young and their families, helping them make  the most of the time they have left together.http://www.tyhafan.org/

Pudsey bear logoBBC Children in Need is the BBC’s UK corporate charity. They provide grants to projects in the UK which focus on children and young people who are disadvantaged. Their vision is that every child in the UK has a childhood which is safe, happy, secure and allows them the chance to reach their potential in life. http://www.bbc.co.uk/pudsey/

Red Nose day logoComic Relief is a major charity based in the UK which strives to create a just world free from poverty.  It is often referred to as Red Nose Day.  Since 1988 it has been raising money and in 2001 Comic Relief launched a second major fundraising campaign – Sport Relief – which takes place in alternate years with Red Nose Day. The idea is that everyone gets active, raises cash and helps to change lives. http://www.comicrelief.com/

Operation Christmas Child logoEvery year Y Pant helps make Christmas happier for Children in Eastern Europe, by taking part in the shoe box appeal. ‘Operation Christmas Child’ involves filling a shoe box with items such as toys, educational supplies, hygiene items etc, gift wrapping it and sending it with thousands of others, to help provide needy children have a more enjoyable Christmas. http://www.operationchristmaschild.org.uk/

Senior Citizens' Christmas PartyA particular date in the calendar that is close to our hearts is the Senior Citizens’ Christmas party. Throughout the year we fundraise through non uniform days and supermarket bag packing to raise money to provide a Christmas party for the senior citizens from the surrounding areas. Christmas dinner, drinks and entertainment are provided and it is always a fantastic event.  Gifts are donated as raffle prizes and the pupils of Y Pant perform various music pieces as entertainment.

The male members of staff have enjoyed taking part in ‘Movember’ over the last few years.  For the month of November, they give the razors a rest and allow their facial hair to grow in to some rather impressive moustaches!  It is very entertaining time for the rest of the members of the school and all proceeds go to very worthwhile research in to testicular cancer.

As you can see, we take giving to charity very seriously at Y Pant.  The school calendar is packed events and occasions to help raise money for a plethora of worthwhile and meaningful organisations and charities. It has now become part of the curriculum for some pupils as part of the CoPE course and pupils studying towards their Welsh Baccalaureate qualification involves doing something for charity.  Be it helping a local charity shop to sort stock, or delivering shoe boxes to less fortunate pupils in faraway countries, we will continue to try to help others and encourage you to do the same.
