Fantastic GCSE Results in 2017!

We are celebrating the achievements of our pupils today with once again over 25% of all pupils achieving the very top accolade of 5 A-A* grades. The school has recorded some impressive results across the school with well over 75% of pupils gaining 5 or more C grades or above. Top performing pupils Emilia Bolton, Josh Dyson, Daniel McClean-Howell and Elizabeth Samuel all had a clean sweep of top grades. The quartet benefitted from sitting both their Maths and Numeracy GCSE in November and securing, along with 10 other pupils at the school, the top A* grades in both papers. This has enabled the students to get a head start on their A-Level Mathematics which they will all go on to study at the school next year. All have high aspirations for the future with Emilia hoping to study Medicine and Josh, Law.

Acting Headteacher Mrs Bev Cheetham said,

‘It really has been a monumental year for the school. In January we moved into a brand new, state of the art building and later that month we had straight ‘Excellent’ judgments from our Estyn inspection. To be celebrating such strong academic success both last week, and this week is really an outstanding achievement.  Staff and parents are really proud of the pupils and their many achievements. We are fortunate to have a team of staff who work tirelessly for the benefit of our students, committed governors who are actively involved in the school, parents who are highly supportive and most importantly great pupils who have really good attitudes to learning.’

A-level Results – fantastic achievements!

Congratulations to years 12 and 13 who have yet again achieved fantastic results!

At A-level, 57% of all grades achieved were A*-B grade and 83% were A*-C grade.  Acting Headteacher Mrs Bev Cheetham said that “we have a traditional A-level offering at Y Pant and I am delighted with these results.  They are a clear reflection on the hard work and dedication of our students and staff and the support those students are receiving at home”.

Many students are now celebrating having got into the University of their choice.

At AS-level, 10% of students gained straight A grades and all are now looking forward to next year’s study.

Creativity Exhibition and Showcase Evening a Great Success!

On Thursday 22nd June Y Pant opened its doors to the local community and hosted an Exhibition and Showcase of the creative work undertaken by its pupils.  The evening was the brainchild of music teacher Marvin Thomas who said…

Central to the evening were the live performances.  These included vocal soloists, DJ’s, rock bands, a ukulele group and performances from the cast of “Oliver!”, our school show which takes place on 10th and 11th July.  The musical numbers took place all over the school including the canteen and the open courtyard which created a lovely atmosphere for the 200 or so visitors.  In addition to these A-level Drama students performed short extracts from their exam pieces and A-level Media students revealed their exam show reels in the lecture theatre.

Whilst not being entertained, visitors enjoyed browsing the excellent Art exhibition in the covered courtyard, seeing cookery demonstrations, reading stories and poems, visiting the Learning Resource Centre and listening to pupils discuss their experience at the Hay Festival.  Welsh Baccalaureate students presented their standpoints on global issues and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award group talked about their experiences and sold raffle tickets to help fund their expeditions.

The raffle prizes were donated by local companies and members of staff – we’re very grateful for all donations.   The raffle raised £196! The prizes were won by:

The DT department showcased some of the excellent projects students have undertaken this year and drew crowds with their 3D printing demonstration.  Y Pant scientists discussed the design of the experiment for the NASA Mission Discovery competition and displayed their winning entry for the Royal Horticultural Society garden design competition and took visitors up to the rooftop classroom.

For many in the local community, this was an excellent opportunity to see our new £24 million building which the school moved into in January and which provided the perfect backdrop for such a creative evening.

Thanks very much to all the staff and pupils who worked hard all evening, and to everyone who came to visit.

Busta Rhymes

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the annual Young Writers Busta Rhymes competition and Y Pant pupils have made a significant contribution to this prestigious event!  The competition aims to find exceptional young poets and this year it received in excess of 6,000 entries.  Y Pant pupils from Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 took part and submitted their poems to the selection panel.  The competition organisers were particularly impressed with their poems and wrote to us expressing their delight that the work of a large number of pupils from Y Pant had been selected for publication.  Fantastic news!  The judges were so impressed by the standard of poems penned by our pupils that 31 have been chosen for publication in this year’s volume of Poets from Northern Ireland & Wales.  Choosing which poems are going to be published is essentially subjective and editors’ preferences do come into it but the judges were impressed by the perception, imagination, expression, creativity and original use of language in our pupils’ work.  The collection of poems will be published on 30th June and available to buy online and in all good bookshops!
